Viral Caramel Date Apple

When you want a caramel apple but don’t want to spend all day in the kitchen and dealing with messy caramel, this is the way to go! Soft chewy Medjool dates are an excellent caramel replacement because they already have a caramel like flavor that pairs so well with the apples and chocolate. I definitely recommend giving this viral caramel date apple recipe a try!

Why you will love this recipe

  • They look like something you would buy straight from a chocolate shop but are actually so easy to make and the flavor is 10/10!
  • These caramel apple are a lot less messy to work with and they don’t take as long to set.
  • They are made without any refined sugars and instead are made with minimally processed ingredients.
  • They are a fun healthier option to regular caramel apples if that is what you are wanting!

What you will need

Medjool Dates – This is the best kind of date to use for this recipe because they are softer and have a more gooey texture. Dates have a flavor very similar to caramel but wont be an exact flavor comparison. They taste very good with the apples though trust me.

Apples – You can use any type of apples that you like best! My favorites are Honeycrisp or Gala.

Chocolate – I love using the Hu Kitchen chocolate gems because they are dairy and refined sugar free. You can substitute with your favorite chocolate though.

Coconut Oil – We will use a little bit of coconut oil to thin the chocolate out for dipping the apples.

Toasted Almonds – I love to added some chopped toasted almonds on top after dipping the apples in the chocolate. You can also use peanuts, pecans, pistachios, or and nut/ seed.

Skewers – I found these bamboo skewers that worked perfectly for the apples!

How to make the viral caramel date apple

Prepare the Dates

First, Carefully slice and pit all of the dates. Take 10 dates and flatten them out and line them up in a square shape over some plastic wrap. Place some parchment paper over top of the dates and then use a rolling pin to flatten them out more.

Cover the Apple

Next, take the parchment paper off of the dates carefully and then wrap the dates around 1 of the apples and squeeze around with the plastic wrap to avoid the dates sticking to your hands. You may need to shift the dates a little to cover most of the apple(repeat this method with the other 2 apples).

Dip in Chocolate

Melt the chocolate chips with the coconut oil either in a double boiler on the stove or in the microwave in 30-second increments until it’s fully melted.  Add the chocolate to a deep enough bowl to dip the apples. Place a skewer in the top of the apples and then dip the caramel date apples into the melted chocolate, coating them completely.

Add the Almonds

Then, place the apples on a parchment paper lined plate. Sprinkle some toasted almonds in top of the apples and then let them set completely.

How to Serve and Store

As soon as the chocolate sets you can eat them. Carefully use a sharp knife to slice the caramel date apples into slices or just eat right off the skewer and enjoy! You can multiply this recipe by however many people you want to serve as well. If you aren’t going to eat them right away, store them in an air-tight container for a couple days in the fridge.
